Game Overview
Wyverns of Wylemuir introduces dragon-like lizards with powerful intellect and ferocious strength to the Catacombs universe. These creatures serve as flying mounts for both heroes and villains.
The expansion is compatible with both Catacombs 3E and Catacombs & Castles 2E. It adds a new class of character, area-of-effect attacks through template pieces, and new heroes and villains who command these mighty beasts.
The story takes place in Wylemuir, an ancient land divided by an escarpment into the Highlands and Wyldlands. The Highlands feature dense evergreen forests and valleys cut by streams of phosphorescent liquid. The Wyldlands stretch across a dry lake bed dotted with spires of living silica. When threatened, a Warrior Maiden seeks the Wyvern Monarch to entreat aid, beginning her transformation into the first Wyvern Rider.
Key Features
Four Area of Effect Templates
The expansion includes four double-sided templates labeled Short, Long, Spread, and Ring. These introduce area attacks to the Dexterity Game System.
During a shot sequence, players place the indicated template on the playmat to see which characters fall within the affected area. All affected characters take damage simultaneously. The standard side inflicts one point of damage, while the critical variant (red side) inflicts two points.
The templates allow for devastating attacks that can damage multiple targets at once. The Ring template creates a circular area around a central point. The Spread template fans out in a cone shape. The Short and Long templates extend in different directions with varying reach.
New Heroes and Villains
Ashlynn is a Warrior Maiden from the Aldioss Tribe who can decipher Wyvern runes. She rides Frostvern, her loyal wyvern companion, into battle. Rowan is a Blind Guardian encased in crystalline armour who defends the frost geode basins. These heroes join the Heroic Forces.
On the Catacombs Forces side, Wylock Wylissa leads the diminutive Metozmores, commanding an army of Shambling Mounds and Poisonwood Golems. Kraesus is a Cursed Druid who reads the constellations to guide devastating attacks.
Each new hero comes with character cards for both Catacombs and Catacombs & Castles, along with wooden pieces and abilities specific to their playstyle.
Riding Wyverns
Characters mount wyverns by hitting the wyvern disc with any character shot. Once riding, the character disc sits atop the wyvern disc.
Riders on wild wyverns cannot take damage while mounted, providing significant protection. Riders on loyal wyverns remain vulnerable in Catacombs but gain defensive benefits in Catacombs & Castles.
Each wyvern has three shot sequences. The default sequence is always available. Stronger sequences require collecting Wyvern Claw Tokens, earned by hitting opponents with the Wyvern Strike shot. Players trade in tokens to unlock more powerful attack combinations.
Shot sequences can include multiple actions performed in any order. A wyvern might perform rush shots to reposition, then attack with a critical template, and retreat to safety.
Additional Game Content
The expansion adds new Ability cards for existing characters: the Chicken Champion, Skeleton Explorer, and Thief gain additional tactical options.
Special Room cards include the Secret Spring and Wyvern Nest. The Wyvern Nest allows players to introduce wild wyverns into the game. New monster cards and Room cards provide content exclusive to Catacombs.
A double-sided playmat features the Poisonwood Bridge on one side and Wild Woodlands on the other, offering new battlegrounds for combat.
Game Variants
Players can introduce wild wyverns by starting with up to three wyverns placed in the centre of the playmat. These become available for any character to mount during the game.
The Wyvern War variation lets all heroes start riding loyal wyverns, creating an aerial combat scenario from the beginning. This changes the tactical dynamic significantly, as mounted heroes gain immediate mobility and attack advantages.
