Game Overview

Catacombs: Fortress of Nazemoor is a dexterity-based dungeon crawler that serves both as a standalone game and an expansion for Catacombs 3E. One player takes the role of the Overseer, controlling monsters and the Catacomb Lord. Up to three other players control heroes who cooperatively battle through dungeons.

The game shares the core flicking mechanics of Catacombs 3E but introduces new content, heroes, monsters, and gameplay systems. If you’re new to the Catacombs series, Fortress makes an excellent entry point with its streamlined approach and complete standalone experience.

Games are played on double-sided game boards or neoprene playmats surrounded by Elzra’s Wall System, an easy-to-assemble barrier that prevents pieces from falling off the table during play. Heroes progress through rooms, defeat monsters, collect treasure from crates, and ultimately face the Catacomb Lord in a final battle.

Key Features

Six New Heroes

Up to three players select heroes from six included characters: Elven Queen, Healer, Insectoid, Prospector, Rabbit Ranger, and Woodland Guardian. Each hero has unique actions and items represented by a wooden disc piece.

The game includes two sets of Rules cards for each hero. “A” cards provide simpler abilities for new players learning the game. “B” cards offer unique attributes and complex powers for experienced players seeking deeper strategy.

Each hero has a distinct playstyle. The Healer supports teammates with healing abilities. The Prospector excels at finding treasure. The Rabbit Ranger provides ranged combat expertise. The Elven Queen commands powerful magical attacks. The Insectoid uses unconventional tactics. The Woodland Guardian defends allies.

Full Compatibility with Catacombs 3E

Fortress is fully compatible with Catacombs 3E and all its expansions. Players can mix and match heroes from Cavern of Soloth, Ice Box, Red Box, and other expansions. Monsters, items, and Room Cards from different sets combine seamlessly.

This compatibility allows experienced Catacombs players to expand their collection while giving new players a complete standalone experience. The shared rule system means components integrate without additional complexity.

Assistant Characters

Fortress introduces Assistants, a new character type that aids both heroes and the Overseer. Assistants are represented by flat wooden pieces that sit on the playmat alongside other characters.

Hero Assistants provide support abilities and tactical options. The Overseer’s Assistants strengthen monster forces and create additional challenges. Assistants can be damaged and defeated like other characters but typically have fewer health points.

This system adds strategic depth. Heroes must decide whether to protect their Assistants or focus fire on enemy threats. The Overseer balances positioning Assistants to maximize their effectiveness while keeping them safe from hero attacks.

Crate System and Treasure

Fortress adds wooden crate pieces that appear in rooms during dungeon exploration. Heroes can attack crates to open them and claim treasure inside.

Opening a crate awards items, gold, or special benefits. The crate system creates secondary objectives during combat. Heroes must balance fighting monsters with pursuing treasure opportunities. Crates add variability, as different rooms place crates in strategic or dangerous locations.

Treasure can include powerful items that shift combat in the heroes’ favor. Some crates contain gold that heroes spend on equipment. Others reveal beneficial one-time effects.

Campaign Mode

The game supports campaign play where heroes progress through connected adventures. Campaign mode tracks hero development, accumulated items, and ongoing story elements across multiple sessions.

Heroes retain items and equipment between scenarios. The campaign structure creates narrative continuity and allows players to experience a longer story arc. Scenarios present different challenges and objectives beyond simple monster defeat.

Campaign mode is optional. Players can enjoy standalone dungeon delves or commit to the extended campaign experience.

Elzra’s Wall System

The game includes Elzra’s Wall System, modular plastic wall segments that assemble around the playmat. The walls prevent wooden discs from flying off the table during enthusiastic flicking.

Wall segments snap together with plastic stands, creating a raised border. Setup takes moments, and the system disassembles for storage. The walls are compatible with all Catacombs games and expansions.

This practical addition solves a common dexterity game challenge. Players can flick with confidence, knowing errant shots won’t scatter pieces across the floor.

Shot Types and Combat Mechanics

Combat uses the established Catacombs flicking system. Players flick their hero disc to perform melee attacks by hitting enemy discs. Ranged shots use separate wooden pieces flicked from the hero’s location toward targets.

The game includes shot modifiers that alter attack behavior. Shot sequences allow multiple actions in combination. Heroes can chain attacks to hit multiple enemies, perform critical strikes for bonus damage, or use defensive maneuvers to avoid incoming threats.

Monsters have varying sizes and abilities. Large monsters require more damage to defeat. Some monsters have defensive properties that reduce incoming damage or reflect attacks. Others possess special shot types unique to their character.
